Genealogy and the Joliet Public Library

The Joliet Public Library offers the researcher of genealogy and local history a variety of resources, such as: Joliet newspapers on microfilm (from 1846 to present); Federal Census population schedules for Will County on microfilm (1840-1880; 1900-1920); and Joliet city directories (from 1875 to present). County histories, atlases, plat books, and high school yearbooks aresome of the other books shelved in the library's Local History collection which researchers may find useful.

The Joliet Public Library has created obituary indexing for the following years:

1915 - 1918on 3 x 5 cardsSouth 2nd Floor
(plus a month or so of both 1914 and 1919)

We have also begun to create Online Obituary Indexes

Patrons Using Genealogy Resources At The Main Building

In addition, the library has in its Local History collection the 6-volumeset, A Necrology of Will County Pioneers, which provides brief death notices for many county residents who died between the years 1886 and 1921. You may also wish to use the Social Security Death Index.
